The Brewery of the Legends has been developing itself (a big thank you to all our customers)and our building started to feel a bit small.
Three years ago we had an idea for expanding, but we were still looking for an appropriate patch of land.
After negotiations with several authorities that lasted for two years, we could finally put a realisation of the project on paper.
In June 2015 the building permit was accepted. In August and September we started the groundworks on a patch of land neighbouring our brewery.
Spring is finally here and it's time to think about the plantations!
The patch of land that we have chosen to build our brewery was originally a wooded area that has been abandoned since a few years. It were mostly poplars growing in this area without any maintenance. Moreover, some parts had become a waste dumping area.
In order to build, we needed to deforest 5000m². But to make sure that the natural balance of the reserve of the river Dender is maintained, we have bought a pasture of 7000m², situated at only 200 metres from the new building, along the riverside.
What future do we have in mind for this area? We want to change it into a wooded shelter for the local fauna and flora.
With the arriving of the good weather, we (or better, our friends from NATUR ART) have planted at least 800 young trees. We have chosen a local selection of trees : ash tree, alder, walnut, oak, chestnut, willow, hazelnut, plane tree, etc.
Surrounding the new building we want to maintain the rest of the wooded area and we would like to install a pond. We are also going to reforest a part of the building site.
Yes, finally the structure of the walls has been installed.
This construction is very impressive. All the walls for the fermentation room, the bottling room, the warm rooms and the storage room are finished.
The slabs of 250m² to cover the laboratory and the storage room have been cast. At the end of this week, the walls for the offices will be installed.
The next steps will be happening during the month of April : the placing of the roof and covering the wall structure with slats in picket (natural wood). This is done to make sure that the building is integrated naturally in his forest surroundings.
We are ready to place the wall structure.
During these last weeks the columns and the wall structure for the caves have been build. Here will come the warm rooms, the storage room and the offices (phase III, IV and V). The reinforcement of these three phases has been done as well, so at the end of this week the concrete slabs can be cast.
Phases I and II (fermentation room and bottling room) will be build afterwards. The isolated wall structure will be build the following weeks. These walls in concrete will be finished off with slats in picket in order to maintain the natural character of the site.
Thanks to the mild weather of these last 2 months the building work has progressed a lot.
On Thursday the first 1200 m² of the slab were cast.
Since mid-October, 380 Franki foundation piles of 15m deep were cast, and the structure of the walls surrounding the flooded caves were placed, as well as the piles that support the first floor.
At the moment we are building the foundations. The land is swampy and lies in a flood plain. Therefore we will build a brewery on piles. The first foundation piles (Franki) of 15m deep are being installed at this very moment.
To be continued...
